Dedicated to the metamorphosis of the Frihamnen quays in the heart of Gothenburg, this book traces the gradual transformation of a former industrial port into a vibrant and inclusive district. At the center of this evolution: Jubileumsparken, a flagship project for the city's 400th anniversary and a true catalyst for urban renewal.
For several years, the site has hosted temporary installations—public baths, a sauna, ephemeral parks, playgrounds—experimenting with new ways to activate public space even before its final development. The book thoroughly documents this unique process and the methodology behind it, in order to inspire other cities to rethink their urban development practices.
Conceived as a collective work, like the park itself, the book gathers contributions from numerous firms and collectives, including Raumlabor Berlin, atelier le balto, AFRY and Polyplan. It addresses various issues—site construction, heritage, artistic design, park maintenance, spontaneous play, climate adaptation—and shows how long-term interdisciplinary collaboration can give rise to a unique park in the European landscape.
