A thematic exploration of nearly 50 women artists who choose women as their subject matter, Women Painting Women includes almost 50 portraits spanning from the 1960s to the present. International in scope, the book recognizes female perspectives that have been underrepresented in the history of post-war figuration. Painting is central, as it has traditionally been a privileged medium for portraiture, particularly for white male artists. The artists here use painting and women as both subject and vectors for change. They range from pioneers like Emma Amos and Alice Neel to emerging artists like Jordan Casteel, Somaya Critchlow, and Apolonia Sokol. All of them place women—their bodies, gestures, and individuality—at the forefront.
